One last look

I always wondered about Doris and D. I don't doubt Doris fell in love with D. I mean he's an honourable, handsome if somewhat quiet and reserved man. He does what's right not for personal gain or out of some guilt or anything - he just does it cause it's right. However I'd like to think that perhaps D fought against feelings for Doris. I don't just mean sexual attraction, I mean love. Sure she basically throws herself at him, but the fact that "Handy" or "Thing" (does it have a name??) teases him suggests, as he knows D pretty well (he's literally attached to him!), that there's something stirring D's pulse, something altering his behavior - something that separates this girl from the rest of the damsels in distress.

This picture is Doris on the night before her wedding to another man, looking out her window at the horizon as she does everyday. This time is the last time. She looks to see if D will ever keep his promise. She loves this man, but longs for D.

Does she see him? Is he there - his cape billowing around him as he sits motionless on his cybermount?

Does she turn away sadly? The road empty and dark.
